The Big Evening Primrose Plant

The big evening primrose (Oenothera erythrosepala) was planted in the primrose family (Onagraceae). The plant is used in Belgium and the Netherlands as a garden plant, but here and there in the wild.

The flower buds are conical. Petals longer than 3 cm longer than the stamens. The plant blooms from June to October. The plant is a zelfbevruchter and pollinates itself as the flower bud is still closed (button pollinator). The fruit is a capsule. The seed is very fine, a thousand seeds weigh about 0.5 g.

This species has been Hugo de Vries mutation experiments. He concluded on the basis of his experiments, in which he leaps changes found that the high mutation primrose very sensitive. As the evening primrose has a very special overervingsmodel he drew the wrong conclusions.

This overervingsmodel was not yet known. The chromosomes during the mating rings, leaving only the ends of chromosomes in each pair. This leaves a series of features always together and no exchange (crossing over) instead. Although often at cell division the chromosomes of the mother and father stayed together and no mixing of chromosomes occurred in the progeny were no plants found that 100% of the mother or the father appeared. This was because of this combination is a viable seeds emerged. Alone or mixed with acted vigorously seed germination was formed. By these two different behaviors to the general laws of genetics in the evening primrose is not large.

Evening primrose seed is from North America come along with the soil as ballast for the ships used, and redistributed from the ports.

In the cultivation of oil revenues to achieve 650-800 kg seed / ha. The total oil content varies from 14-28%. The oil from evening primrose seeds among others. made into a homeopathic remedy and contains rare gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). For people who linoleic acid in the body can not convert to gamma-linolenic acid is essential medicine. But this is rare. Furthermore, gamma-linolenic acid blood pressure and cholesterol-lowering effect. The antihypertensive effect is not proven and the cholesterol lowering effect is less than or equal to that of linoleic acid.
