The Brownish-Red Helleborine

The brownish-red helleborine (Epipactis atrorubens) is an orchid. The plant in the Netherlands is legally protected and is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and moderately decreased. The plant is in the Netherlands in South-Limburg, near Amsterdam and Voorne.

The plant is 25-60 cm high and blooms from June to July with vanilla scented purple-red flowers. The upper member of the stem is often longer than the lower members. The ovary is densely covered with brown-red hair.

The brownish-red helleborine is on moderately moist, calcareous soils and the grass to grow in sunny places or in light shade.
